Este pájaro, el hornero (Furnarius rufus), es elegante, de plumaje marrón con su garganta más clara y de pico largo. Se desplaza dando pequeños pasos en busca de insectos para alimentarse. Es elegida por Argentina y Uruguay como ave nacional.
Tiene aspecto discreto , pero es un ave maravillosa. Es un ingeniero y constructor inigualable. Realiza un fabuloso nido de barro a modo de horno, quizás único en el mundo. Unido de por vida a la misma pareja ambos construyen con su pico, barro, hojas, pequeñas ramas, estiércol o crines de caballo su obra maestra. El nido de forma esférica tiene dos salas : una entrada y una sala mayor para los pichones. Generalmente, orientan la entrada del nido al resguardo de los vientos fríos del sur. Lo colocan en un lugar elevado y a veces insólito : postes de luz , monumentos , casas. Viven en el campo , pero también en la ciudad, son parte del paisaje urbano.
Construyen un nuevo nido cada año que sigue siendo funcional a otros animales : aves, reptiles o mamíferos.

They place the nest in a high and sometimes unusual positions : lampposts , monuments , houses. They live in the countryside but also in the city , they are part of the urban landscape.
